In Poeltl, volleyball’s loss is Spurs’ gain

马刺中锋Jakob Poeltl从小是在奥地利维也纳的体育馆中长大。
Poeltl的双亲，包括母亲Martina以及父亲Rainer Omer，都是奥地利的国家队选手成员。
只不过，他们打的是排球。
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Spurs center Jakob Poeltl practically came of age in the
gyms of his native Vienna, Austria.
It wasn’t necessarily to follow the sport that would eventually make him a
millionaire.
Both of Poeltl’s parents — mother Martina and father Rainer Omer — were
members of Austria’s national team.
In volleyball.
Poeltl说：“我从小就在排球的环境中长大，在他们的比赛中担任球童之类的，放假的时
候，我会跟我的家人一起打球。”

“I grew up around volleyball, being a ball kid at their games and stuff like
that,” Poeltl said. “I would play with my family, like on vacation and
stuff.”
When it came time to dedicate himself to a single sport, Poeltl (pronounced “
Purtle”) chose one that in his home country rivaled volleyball in terms of
unpopularity.

都颇为受限，不管是经费、体育馆空间、教练等。”

“The only big sports in Austria are soccer and winter sports, like skiing,”
Poeltl said. “With basketball, it’s all a bit limited in every way —
money, space for gyms, coaches, all that stuff.”
Poeltl was once a skier, too, but gave up the thrill-seeking sport as a
teenager when it became obvious his future was on the hardwood. The 7-footer’
s long-ago attraction to basketball is paying off now for the Spurs.

With Rudy Gay out nursing a sore left wrist, coach Gregg Popovich returned
Poeltl to the starting lineup for Monday’s 119-107 victory in Detroit.
It was the fifth start of the season and only the second since October for
Poeltl, who had emerged as a vital member of the Spurs’ second unit.

A 23-year-old former lottery pick in Toronto, Poeltl was an intriguing
throw-in in the summertime trade that also brought DeMar DeRozan to San
Antonio.

Teammates rave about Poeltl’s sure hands, his screen-setting and his nose
for the offensive glass. In a comparison that borders on Spurs sacrilege,
some say Poeltl recalls franchise great Tim Duncan in some of those areas.
Poeltl is averaging 5.9 points and 5.3 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game,
numbers that belie the important reserve role Poeltl carved with Pau Gasol
shelved for two months with a foot injury.

“His comfort and understanding and experience is all kicking in on both ends

Though glad to fill in as a spot starter, Poeltl said he is looking forward
to returning to the second unit in time.

“It’s different playing with the starters,” Poeltl said. “I’m not 100
percent comfortable yet. I’ve played a lot more minutes with the second
unit, so I feel more comfortable with them right now. At the end of the day,
I can adjust to both.”
