他们是战俘,他们在台湾
1941年太平洋战争爆发,激战中,数十万盟军士兵被日军俘虏,分送各地集中营。四千多
人被送往日本殖民地-台湾,充当奴工。
大多数是英国、印度、澳洲的年轻人,命运在台湾交会。在全台十四个阴森泥烂的战俘营
里,战俘被迫从事采矿、挖掘河床的苦役,管理他们的,是福尔摩沙的台籍“监视员”,
日本战败后,战俘等船归乡,很多监视员则被送上国际法庭接受审判。
战争,使人的命运、角色、价值被错置──台湾有一段我们自己不太认识的历史。

They Were Prisoners of War
They Were in Taiwan
During WWII, thousands of allied POWS were held captive on Taiwan by the
Japanese military. Most of them were young soldiers from the UK, India and
Australia. They lived in the grimiest of conditions and were forced into
slave labor such as mining and river dredging. The camp inspectors were young
Taiwanese men, many of whom were later brought to trial for war crime.
This part of Taiwan’s history, where people’s fate, roles, and values were
distorted by war, remains largely unknown to most people.
