In the summer of 2003, a new era began in Indiana. Larry Bird returned as team
president. Jermaine O’Neal and Reggie Miller re-signed. And a new head coach
, Rick Carlisle, stepped in.
Jerm
It was Carlisle’s first year coaching the Pacers, and with a young core, the
team immediately posted a league-best 61 wins - the best regular season in fra
nchise history.
The Pacers swept the Celtics in the playoffs and took down a rising Miami team
led by Dwyane Wade. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals.
Though they fell 2-4 to the Pistons - a team built on elite defense - the futu
re was bright.
With rising stars like Jermaine O’Neal, Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, and Jama
al Tinsley - and Carlisle already proving himself in year one - this was a tea
m built for a championship run.
Jermaine O’Neal、Ron Artest、Stephen Jackson、Jamaal Tinsley 都还年轻,而 Car
Heading into the 2004-05 season, the Pacers were considered one of the favorit
es to win it all.
But one night changed everything.
November 19, 2004. The Pacers were up 97-82 in Detroit with just 45.9 seconds
left. The win was already sealed.
Then Ben Wallace lost his cool after a foul and shoved Ron Artest. Artest didn
’t retaliate - he followed his therapist’s advice and laid down on the score
r’s table to calm himself.
That’s when a cup of beer flew from the stands and hit Artest. Chaos exploded
.
Artest stormed into the stands. Jackson followed to protect him. O’Neal punch
ed a fan who ran onto the court.
The Malice at the Palace had begun.
In 2004, there was no social media. No instant replays on Twitter. And the lea
gue wanted to move past the incident quickly.
Rather than look at the full picture, the NBA threw the book at the Pacers.
Artest was suspended for the rest of the season - 73 games. Jackson got 30. O
’Neal, originally suspended for 25, had it reduced to 15.
Jermaine O’Neal
Five Pacers were suspended in total. More than half the roster was gone overni
ght.
Reggie Miller led what was left of the team - a group fans came to call the “
Iron Six”: Fred Jones, James Jones, Austin Croshere, Eddie Gill, and David Ha
rrison.
Somehow, that group still made the playoffs. They even beat the Celtics in the
first round.
But against Detroit, they ran out of gas. And in front of a home crowd, Reggie
played his final game.
Reggie Miller
That Pacers team was built to win a title - not to be torn apart.
Carlisle tried to keep things afloat the next season - using 31 different star
ting lineups.
Rick Carlisle
But the damage was done.
The Pacers began a rebuild. They drafted Danny Granger. Later, Roy Hibbert.
Carlisle eventually left.
Rick Carlisle
They never tanked. They drafted Paul George. Traded for Victor Oladipo.
ictor Oladipo。
But every time they reached the Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron was in the w
ay.
James
It felt like the window had shut in 2005.
Until now.
Carlisle came back in 2021. And in 2024, he led this new generation to the NBA
Finals.
This Pacers team plays with poise. They move the ball. They trust each other.
They’re not just playing for now - they’re finishing what was stolen.
This is for Reggie. For the Iron Six. For the team that never got its shot.
When Haliburton hit the dagger in Madison Square Garden, he turned to the boot
h and shouted - “Reggie!”
eggie。
It was more than a celebration - it was a salute.
Indiana is back.
This time, justice needs to be served.
Let them finish the story - and let 90-year-old owner Herb Simon finally hold
that trophy.
Herb Simon
We’re back.
