Activision Blizzard has partnered with Nielsen for esports brand valuation.
Nielsen will begin by tracking Overwatch and Call of Duty events this year.
With this partnership, Activision Blizzard has gained a powerful tool for
attracting non-endemic brands to its esports programs.
In esports, we often measure big moments in the industry’s growth by the
introduction of major non-endemic partnerships. Today, Activision Blizzard
Database-Link-e1521645463907 had one such moment by announcing its
partnership with Nielsen.
While most people will know Nielsen as the ratings system for the television
industry, the company recently created an esports division to help quantify
the value of the esports market. In this new partnership, Nielsen will
measure brand exposure across Activision Blizzard’s esports titles.
Nielsen will start by tracking the Overwatch Database-Link-e1521645463907
League, Overwatch World Cup, and Overwatch Contenders, as well as the Call of
Duty Database-Link-e1521645463907 World League, and plans to expand into
other games later in the year.

Last month, The Esports Observer reported on concerns related to potentially
misleading data in a Nielsen report on the Australian esports scene. The
company has since addressed these concerns and stated it will review the
report and re-release it at a later date.
With this partnership, Activision Blizzard has gained a powerful tool for
attracting non-endemic brands to its esports programs. Many brands without
experience in gaming still struggle to understand the appeal of the esports
industry, despite its recent growth. Nielsen is a widely respected
demographic tracking service for traditional sports and other media. By
presenting marketing data from such a trusted source, Activision Blizzard can
present esports with an added level of legitimacy that should open doors to
new partnership opportunities.
