'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands - It was a special day for Michaella Krajicek on
Monday, as not only did she win her first match at the Topshelf Open, she also
got engaged. In front of everyone.
The first order of business was Krajicek's first round match against Jana
Cepelova, and she served up a winner, dropping a whopping 11 aces to defeat
the recent Charleston finalist, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
And then the big moment - the icing on the cake of a perfect day. Krajicek's
boyfriend, German ATP World Tour player Martin Emmrich, stepped
onto the court, went down on one knee, and proposed.
Krajicek said yes.
"It was a huge surprise!" a beaming Krajicek said afterwards. "I mean, we
spoke about marriage a couple of times before, but I didn't expect it now. It's
very special. I'm really happy and I feel so lucky that he did it like this. We
met here one year ago and I think it's such a very special place to do it.
"The first 10 or 15 seconds when he came on the court I thought, 'Okay, it's
nice to see him, but this is strange.' But then I saw he had tears in his eyes,
and I was like, 'Oh wow,' and I realized what was going to happen! I was so
focused on him the whole time I didn't hear anything he was saying!
"I just knew I was for sure going to say yes. That was all I knew in that
moment."
How will the happy couple celebrate?
"My parents are here, and his coach is here, so we'll have a nice family
celebration," she said. "But we're both still in the tournament - he has a
match tomorrow - so we're still focusing on that.
"But I'm sure we'll have enough time to celebrate after!"
Krajicek has been ranked as high as No.30 and has three WTA titles to her
name - Tashkent in 2005, Hobart and 's-Hertogenbosch in 2006. Her best run
at a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon in 2007, where she made the quarterfinals
(falling to eventual finalist - and 2013 champion - Marion Bartoli).
