Charles Barkley says he thought credit cards were free money in college until
he reached the NBA and his agent explained that a $2,000 purchase could cost
$22,000
“You know in college they send you MasterCard and Visa. I remember me and
all my teammates, we’d go shopping every weekend, and we’d be high fiving
each other like, ‘We getting over on these white folks.’ They sending us
credit cards and we paid the minimum”
“Then when I get to the NBA, my agent says, ‘You got bills we need to take
care of.’ I said, ‘I got some bills.’ He’s like, ‘Hey, what are all
these bills you got?’ I said, ‘Man, we were getting over on those white
folks. We were buying all this shit’”
“He says, ‘Are you serious right now. Y’all been buying all this shit,
paying the minimum and keep buying shit. You know how credit cards work?’ I
said, ‘Yeah, you get them and you buy shit.’ He said, ‘Son, you’re only
paying the interest. You see this thing you bought for $2,000. At the rate
you going, you going be paying $22,000 for it by the time you’re done’”
“He says, ‘That’s how they get poor people. They give you a credit card,
you pay the minimum, and you don’t ever end up paying it off. But by the
time you pay it off, you paid like three times what it originally cost.’ I
said, ‘You need to go meet with all my college teammates. We’ve been doing
this shit the whole three years I’ve been in college’”
