Ari Alexander :
AJ Dybantsa has been the center of attention in Massachusetts basketball since h
e was a middle schooler dominating older kids. Now as the NBA draft nears, he ho
pes to become New England's second straight first overall pick. I went one-on-on
e with AJ, quite literally, at a workout in Stoughton as he gets ready for the N
BA.
Stought
The number one high school player in America became a first team All-American at
BYU. The next step for AJ Dybantsa is to become the number one pick in the NBA
draft. How much belief is there that when you do get your name called that it is
going to be the first name?
Dybantsa :
Like, the max you can get.
Ari Alexander :
So you're 100% confident that number one overall pick?
Dybantsa : Yeah.
是的。
Ari Alexander :
Dybantsa led the country in scoring, averaging 25.5 points per game in his only
college season, showcasing the type of skills that will translate into the leagu
e.
Dybantsa :
It's my versatility. I'm pretty much doing everything on the court at a high le
vel.
Shooting at a high level, defending at a pretty high level. I just think that a
lot of teams wouldn't pass up on it.
Ari Alexander :
Dybantsa's been far more focused on being the top pick than what that means for
where he'll play.
Dybantsa
Dybantsa :
Trades happen. You never know what's going to happen until draft night itself. A
nybody can trade up.
Anybody can trade down. But I'm going to be happy with anybody.
Ari Alexander :
And it could mean he ends up at the nation's capital for a Washington Wizards te
am who made two huge trades last season.
If there's no major movement, when you look at their roster, Anthony Davis, Tree
Young, and just some of their other younger guys, what excites you about being
able to play with that group?
Dybantsa :
Two All-Stars right there. So learning from two All-Stars my rookie year would b
e super exciting.
Just gathering that knowledge would be helpful for me.
Ari Alexander :
The Wizards may have the number one pick, but just behind them is the Utah Jazz,
who would provide a comfortable landing spot for a player very used to Utah.
So if they're able to trade up or if you somehow end up on the Jazz, what do you
like about their setup, their roster, and maybe the opportunity to be in a plac
e where you're familiar?
Dybantsa :
Yeah, so I went to a couple games. Obviously, their atmosphere is just rocking a
ll the time. But I think they have a good core.
They have an All-Star in Jaren Jackson and Lauri Markkanen. Keyonte, I think, co
uld have been the most improved player this year. So I have a good little squad,
and I think if I went there, I could fit in
