John Wall sees it, and he’s not holding back.
On The Dawg Talk Podcast, the five-time All-Star pulled back the curtain on
the modern NBA and made it clear: the point guard role just isn’t what it
used to be.
“You’re really putting two guards as point guards now,” Wall said. “They’
re not trying to create for others, they’re getting buckets. That’s it.”
Wall outlined two types of point guards in today’s game: the pure scorers,
and the ones who actually push the pace and get teammates involved. He
pointed to Tyrese Haliburton and Chris Paul as rare examples of guards who
still carry the torch of old-school playmaking while adapting to the modern
speed.
And Wall isn’t just reminiscing, he’s speaking from experience.
“If I can get my teammate paid, I did my job,” he said. “That’s what a
point guard does. There aren’t too many of those left.”
In an era dominated by highlights and stats, Wall still believes in the type
of PG that earns respect in the locker room, not just on the timeline. It’s
not about control. It’s about balance. And players know who they’d rather
hoop with.
“Because nobody wants to just run cardio.”
Wall isn’t asking the game to go back in time. But he’s reminding everyone
what made the best point guards great: the ability to make everyone better.
