Rocco, the beloved English bulldog that belonged to former Golden State Warrio
rs star Klay Thompson, has died, according to Mychal Thompson, the now-Maveric
ks guard's father. He was 13.
The elder Thompson revealed the devastating news on the Wednesday edition of E
SPN LA sports radio show “Mason & Ireland.”

“As Mase and Ireland always say, when someone dear has departed, ‘Hail fello
w well met,’” Thompson said while introducing a segment in the third hour of
the show. “We had to put Rocco, Klay’s dog, down over the weekend.”
After an immediate outburst of sympathy from everyone else on the show, Thomps
on shared that Rocco was put down Saturday but that “it was time.” He added
shortly afterward, “We were all sad, but Rocco had a great, long life. So tod
ay’s game is dedicated to the memory of our service men and women, and to Roc
co,” before launching into a jovial on-air game featuring trivia questions ab
out the dog.

As Klay Thompson ascended into superstardom in the NBA, so too did his beloved
pet. A 2014 San Francisco Chronicle article about Thompson’s growth starts w
ith an anecdote where the then-Dubs guard was anxiously waiting to finish up s
igning his new contract to get back to Rocco. The relationship was the poster
child for the old saying of “man’s best friend,” especially in the sports w
orld. The English bulldog had his own Instagram account — although it has bee
n mostly dormant since May 2023 — and social media posts that involved Thomps
on and Rocco would rocket to viral fame.
Naturally, the NBA pet got plenty of media attention, with varying levels of s
uccess. He was part of a BMW ad with Thompson, for instance, but when ESPN tri
ed to get him in-studio in LA, things didn’t work out. Multiple features abou
t Thompson throughout the mid-to-late 2010s would involve some form of Thompso
n calling Rocco his “son.” Even with that closeness, when a reporter asked t
he Splash Brother how Rocco handled his absences, Thompson replied, “It’s no
t too bad he lives a pretty good life. I think he understand you gotta go to w
ork and pay the bills.”

Rocco had mostly left the spotlight over the past couple of years or so. His m

co would be turning 10 on April 20.
“He was born in mid-April at some point, but to make things easier, I say the
20th,” he said at the time. “Easy date to remember and to be a 10-year-old
bulldog, I’m very grateful for Rocco.”
Thompson got three more years to appreciate the most beloved dog in the league
