In a recent interview with CNN, Kanter revealed that the NBA tried to force
him to remove his sneakers.
"I remember it was our first game," Kanter told CNN.
"It was at Madison Square Garden and I wore 'Free Tibet' shoes and I went out
there. I remember right before the game, two guys from the NBA came up to me
and said, 'You have to take your shoes off, we are begging you'.
"And I was like: 'I am sorry, what are you talking about?'
"They said: 'You have to take these shoes off, we are getting so many calls'.
And I was like: 'Is there a rule that I am breaking by wearing these shoes?'
"They said 'No'. And I was like: 'Look, I am getting ready for my citizenship
tests and I've been studying really hard. There is 27 amendments and the
first amendment is freedom of speech. I know my rights. You can't take my
rights away from me. I don't care if I am fined. I am not going to take my
shoes off.'"
Later, Kanter acknowledged that both men apologised to him for their
behaviour and explained why he felt encouraged by the NBA to publicly support
Tibet.
"NBA made me do this," Kanter added. "Because every time when one of the NBA
teams or the commissioner comes out to speak, they say we are encouraging
players to talk about whatever they want to talk about.
"We are giving freedom to our players to talk about all the injustices
happening around the world, all the human rights abuses around the world. So,
they gave me this right."
