Shaquille O’Neal established himself as one of the top centers in league
history and one of the best players in Lakers history. His legacy was
cemented after his domination during the three-peat title run of the Lakers
in the early 2000s.

Also cemented as Shaq’s legacy is his legendarily bad free throw shooting.
While he claimed he made the free throws when they mattered – a fact that
could be considered true in small sample sizes – in his career Shaq was a
52.7 percent free throw shooter. In the playoffs, despite his proclamations,
Shaq’s free throw percentage dropped to 50.4 percent in 216 career
postseason games.

Yet despite his infamously bad shooting at the line, Shaq’s 50.4 percent
shooting dwarfs Lonzo Ball’s current percentage. In his second season, Ball
is shooting 41.7 percent from the line, a figure down from his already-bad
rookie season when he shot 45.1 percent. As his percentage continues to
crater, the concern from fans has continued to grow.

Shaq himself commented on Ball’s free throw shooting recently. In an
interview on Dan Patrick’s radio show discussing Anthony Davis, the subject
of Ball, his trade value and his free throw shooting came up, leading to the
following exchange.
