Ban on Charter Flights 'Likely to Be Lifted for Two NBA Teams'

A ban on charter flights at Shenzhen's main airport will likely be lifted
for planes bringing two NBA teams for exhibition games in October, a source
close to airport authorities says.

The NBA's Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers are scheduled to play a
preseason game in Shenzhen on October 11 and again in Shanghai on October 14,
the U.S. league said earlier this year.

However, the Civil Aviation Administration of China banned Shenzhen Bao'an
International Airport from handling charter flights in July as a penalty for
its handling of several delays. The airport is also prohibited from
scheduling new commercial flights pending a review.

The exemption for the NBA would be made so the teams do not have to land in
either Guangzhou or Zhuhai, the person close to airport authorities said.
Those two cities are a two-hour drive from Shenzhen.

Delays at the busy Bao'an airport earlier this year led to several incidents
involving angry passengers. In one, passengers tired of waiting for their
plane to take off opened a plane's door and scuffled with airline staff. Both
domestic and international flights in China are often delayed, much to the
annoyance of passengers. The problems are sometimes linked to military
activities.

The NBA has become very popular in China in recent years, especially after
NBA teams came to play in the country in 2004.

league's biggest names, including the Clippers' Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
Jeremy Lin, a Taiwanese-American basketball player who rose to fame in 2012,
is also coming because he plays for the Charlotte Hornets.
