ORLANDO – Even three seasons later, Dwight Howard still gets nostalgic when
he plays against the Magic.

The Rockets center spent the first eight years of his NBA career in Orlando
with the team that selected him as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2004. He
put together a string of All-Star level years with the Magic and led the team
to the NBA Finals in 2009 (the Magic lost to the Lakers in five games to win
the NBA Championship that year).

“Well, anytime we come back to Orlando, there are always memories of the
past and the good days we had here,” Howard said.

His time in Orlando ended on a low note, as he had highly publicized drama
with then-coach Stan Van Gundy. He eventually requested a trade and ended up
with the Lakers for a year before signing with the Rockets last season.

Despite the negativity that surrounded him when he left, Howard said he has
fond memories of playing for the Magic.

When he played for them, it was his goal to leave a good legacy. That is
something he still thinks about.
“I think about it a lot, talk about it a lot,” Howard said. “We had an
amazing time, even though it didn’t end the way we all wanted it to end. At
the end of the day, my time here was great, every minute of it – being in
the community, going to the Finals, being at Disney World or Universal
Studios. I had a great time here. I wish things didn’t happen the way they
did, to end on a sour note.
