Monta Ellis’ attacking style should benefit from addition of Tyson Chandler

DALLAS — Perhaps no one, not even Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban or coach
Rick Carlisle, saw Monta Ellis having as great an impact as he ultimately did
following his addition to the team last season.

Emerging as the Mavericks’ second-leading scorer, Ellis played in all 82 games
for the second straight season. Ellis also averaged 19 points per game for the
seventh straight season in his career, giving the Mavs a second go-to scorer to

He added: “He’s the only guy on the team that played 82 games. He played

know, he did a lot of things that were intangible and that were important, and
at 28 years old he’s got a lot of great years left. He’s really just entering
his prime, and there’s some things that we can do to help him get even better.

In addition to using his cat-like quickness to attack the rim at will, Ellis
also starred as the Mavericks’ lead facilitator while dishing out a team-high
5.7 assists a game during the regular season. Ellis recorded eight double-digit
assist games as well, including twice dishing out a season-high 13 assists
during a 129-127 road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Jan. 15 and again in
a 113-102 win at Detroit on Feb. 22.

Ellis’ all-around game was on full display as the Mavs scratched and clawed
their way into the playoffs when he was named Western Conference Player of the
Week for games played from April 7-13, averaging 25.7 points, 4.7 assists, 4.0
rebounds, 1.0 steal and 40.0 minutes in that span. He also shot 51.6 percent
from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range as the team went 2-1
during that stretch, setting the Mavericks up to return to the postseason for a
13th time in the last 14 years.

“I just took what the defense gave me,” Ellis modestly said after receiving
the honor. “If they sagged off, I took one or two dribbles and pulled up. If

free-throw line. When they closed in, I was able to find shooters. That’s what
[Carlisle] wanted me to do, so I did it.”

After averaging 3.2 turnovers a game last season, however, Ellis figures to
benefit from one of the Mavericks’ roster upgrades this summer.

Thriving in the Mavs’ pick-and-roll sets a season ago, Ellis will now likely
find himself looking to attack off screens set by reacquired center Tyson
Chandler. That could lead to a boost in his assists and a decline in his
turnovers, according to Cuban, as the team adds another above-the-rim finisher
alongside highflying big man Brandan Wright.

Chandler battled nagging injuries with the New York Knicks but still finished
the ’13-14 season averaging 8.7 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 59.3
percent from the floor in his 55 games.

Chandler also set a franchise record by connecting on 65.4 percent of his shots
from the field during the Mavs’ 2011 championship chase, looking to once again
make himself at home in Dallas after the six-player trade with New York on June
25 that brought the athletic 7-footer back to town. And it’s Chandler’s
ability to catch and finish in traffic that Cuban sees benefitting Ellis on the
offensive end as the two are expected to form one of the most potent
pick-and-roll duos in the league.

drop-off point that he only really had with Brandan Wright in the game.”
