Over-The-Air Activation (OTAA) is a method that allows devices to join a
LoRaWAN. Unlike Activation by Personalization (ABP), the other activation
method, OTAA requires a handshake process for both parties to agree on the
keys that will be used for message encryption and integrity verification. If
the connection between an end device and the network server never falls off,
the keys will be used constantly during the lifetime of the connection. The
method of rejoin, built on top of OTAA, permits the end devices that are
already activated to refresh their session keys. It can be established by end
devices or the network server in a periodic or non-periodic manner to enhance
the security of traffic in LoRaWAN.
