Anthony Martial and Phil Jones good
David de Gea - 5
His kicking was suspect at times and he unnecessarily palmed Ben Mee's header
over to give Burnley a corner.
Antonio Valencia - 6
On a day where Juan Mata was anonymous, Valencia was curiously unadventurous
and did not offer an additional outlet on the right flank.
Chris Smalling - 6
Haphazardly hacked at the ball regularly to encourage Burnley's artisans. Was
bailed out early on by Phil Jones but improved in second-half.
Phil Jones - 7
Intervened a couple of times early on and was vigilant whenever Burnley
embarked on counter-attacks. Another solid display.
Ashley Young - 6
Produced the best moment of the first-half on his return to the team. More
attack-minded than fellow full-back Valencia but lacked incision.
Nemanja Matic - 5
Started shakily and lacked intensity to get United going in attack. His
passing was regularly shoddy and he was deservedly booked.
Paul Pogba - 6
Tried to make things happen and may have done better with a first-half volley
he lofted over Nick Pope's crossbar.
Juan Mata - 3
Henrikh Mkhitaryan's legacy lived on through Mata. Needed to perform more
than ever as United prepare to welcome Alexis Sanchez but is the obvious
fall-guy for the next league match.
Jesse Lingard - 5
Burnley's bruisers neutered the United midfielder, who was kept so far away
from goal for most of the game he was never likely to provide a spontaneous
breakthrough.
Anthony Martial - 7
Endeavoured against former United defender Phil Bardsley and was game but
failed to find a breakthrough in the first-half. Found it brilliantly in the
second.
Romelu Lukaku - 7
Lacked service and was isolated due to his teammates' casualness. Overcame
his frustration to brilliantly assist Martial's goal.
Subs
Marouane Fellaini - 6
Helped United switch to a midfield three.
Marcus Rashford - 3
Wasteful with the ball.
Ander Herrera - N/A
Came on in added time.
