Royals catcher Salvador Perez suffered a Grade 2 tear of the MCL in his
left knee when he slipped and fell while carrying luggage
in his house Tuesday night. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.
Perez, 27, is a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner.
He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 World Series, which the Royals
won for Kansas City's first championship in 30 years. Last season, Perez
slashed .268/.297/.495 with a career-high 27 home runs in 129 games.
Perez's backup is Drew Butera, who has appeared in 175 games for the Royals
over the past three seasons. In 2017, he slashed .227/.284/.319 with three
home runs in 75 games for Kansas City, partly as a fill-in for Perez
when he missed time due to an intercostal strain.
Cam Gallagher, who made his Major League debut with the Royals last season,
will likely be Butera's backup behind the plate. The 25-year-old hit
.250 (6-for-24) with a double and a home run in 13 games for Kansas City
in 2017.
