“I’ve heard players, and I’m talking about some of the best players in the
league,’’ Arrieta told USA TODAY Sports, “question whether I’ve taken
steroids or not. Some of the things I hear are pretty funny, and some people
are idiots, frankly.
“I’ll see on Twitter, ‘My close source revealed to me he’s on steroids.’
Well, the 10 tests I take a year say otherwise. I eat plants. I eat lean
meat. I work out. And I do things the right way.
“If there are guys still on it, I hope they get caught. I care about the
integrity of the game. I wouldn’t want to disappoint my family, my friends,
my fans. That’s a huge motivating factor in doing it the right way.
“There are so many people that are counting on you, and leaning on all of us
in this clubhouse to do some special things for the city of Chicago. To
jeopardize that by taking banned substances, would be a ridiculous mistake.’
’
Beyond the Cubs’ World Series aspirations, Arrieta has plenty at stake. He’
s grossed less than $6 million in his career, but last year’s Cy Young
Award-winning season boosted his 2016 salary to $10.7 million. He’ll have
one more season of arbitration eligibility.
And should the Cubs not believe he’s worth a seven-year investment before
Arrieta hits the market in 2017, he guarantees there will be plenty of teams
waiting.
“If we don’t work out a deal here, and I go to free agency,’’ Arrieta
said, “I will get six or seven years. No doubt about that. I’d like to stay
in Chicago, but if they don’t want me, somebody will.’’
Arrieta and agent Scott Boras asked for a seven-year contract extension this
winter. The Cubs, Boras said, weren’t willing to talk about more than three
or four years.
They’ll talk again this winter, but considering that Arrieta is actually
pitching better than a year ago, the price tag only goes up, and free agency
gets a year closer.
“Look at all of the pitchers getting six- and seven-year deals at 30, 31,
and 32,’’ Arrieta said. “You see what’s going on and the money that’s
out there. You’d be a fool not to try to benefit from that, or at least try
to get what you feel you’re worth.
“You’ve got to strike when the iron is hot. And mine will be hot for a
while.’’
“I think the age thing is just something to say,’’ Arrieta said. “When it
comes up with my age, I’m like, let’s just end the conversation there. That
’s irrelevant to me. I’ll pitch until I’m 40.
“I know the Cubs don’t typically do six- or seven-year deals, but I think
there are obviously times when there should be exceptions. I think I’ve done
pretty well here. I would enjoy staying in Chicago. But when the
opportunities are out there like they are, I’m going to keep an open mind.’
’
Really, this is what Arrieta envisioned he could do all along, even in the
five years he struggled in the Baltimore Orioles organization, knowing the
talent was inside his body. He just needed to pitch his own style, throwing
violently across his body, just as he has done all of his life. The Cubs and
pitching coach Chris Bosio gave him that freedom, and he ran with it.
“As a young player, it’s hard to do,” he says. “You got 15 people pulling
you in each direction. ‘Hey, do this. Do that. Try this. Try that.’ That
doesn’t work.
“I’m not the only one who has experienced things like that, but it’s hard
to resist when you’re a young player. As you get a little older, you
understand what you need to do to be good, regardless of who likes it or doesn
’t like it. It’s my career. And at the end of the day, it’s going to be
how I think I can do it best.’’
“I feel,’’ Arrieta said, “that I’m only going to get better.’’
We’re starting to believe him.
