From Elias: Chris Davis hit two home runs and drove in three runs in the
Orioles' 9-6 home win over the Nationals. Davis' last run batted in was his
50th of the season, in Baltimore's 53rd game. Only two players in franchise
history have needed fewer team games to reach the 50-RBI milestone: Ken
Williams recorded his 50th RBI in the St. Louis Browns' 47th game in 1925,
and Frank Robinson did it in game #49 for the O's in 1967.

From Elias: Ryan Zimmerman's three home runs weren't enough for the Nationals
in their 9-6 loss at Baltimore. It was the ninth time in Washington's
franchise history that a player homered three times in a game. Strangely,
five of those nine instances were turned in by third basemen. Larry Parrish
did it for the Expos in 1977, 1978, and 1980; and Tim Wallach went deep three
times for Montreal in a game at Atlanta in 1987.

starts this season, allowed three runs in six innings to earn the win in the
Mets' 9-4 victory at Yankee Stadium. Hefner is the third starting pitcher
ever to beat the Yankees in the Bronx after having gone winless while making
least nine previous starts that year. Ted Gray (0-9 in 10 starts) of the
Tigers won at the old Yankee Stadium in 1953, as did Scott Elarton (0-5 in 10
starts) for the Royals in 2006.

From Elias: Domonic Brown hit two home runs, while Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz
each homered once in the Phillies' 4-3 home win over the Red Sox. It was only
the second time in franchise history that Philadelphia scored at least four
runs in a one-run victory in which all of its scoring came via solo home
runs. The first came on Sept. 1, 1964, when the Phils opened what would turn
out to be the most disappointing month in team history with a 4-3 home win
over the Houston Colt 45s. Dick Allen, Johnny Callison, Wes Covington, and
Frank Thomas provided the scoring in that game.

From Elias: Pedro Alvarez's first-pitch, two-run double tied the game at
three, and Travis Snider's RBI double on the next pitch drove in the Alvarez
as winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Pirates' 5-3 home
win over the Tigers. The last time teammates hit back-to-back, first-pitch
extra-base hits to plate the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning or
later was on Aug. 22, 2004, when Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz hit
consecutive first-pitch home runs, turning a one-run deficit into a 6-5 Red
Sox lead against the White Sox in Chicago.

won three games in 2013 in which he issued at least four walks, tying the Red
Sox' Felix Doubront for second-most in the majors behind the Padres' Jason
Marquis (four).

win over the Dodgers in Anaheim. Over the last five seasons, only one other
major-league pitcher has surrendered multiple home runs in a save of one
inning or less. That was the Nationals' Tyler Clippard, who gave up two
homers to the Mets on July 18, 2012.

with the winning run in the Padres' 10-inning 3-2 home win over the Mariners.
Venable, who has played his entire major-league career for San Diego, is now
19-for-48 (.396) lifetime with the bases full. The only Padres players with
better batting averages in that situation (minimum 30 AB) are Phil Nevin
(.506) and Tony Gwynn (.444).

From Elias: For the second straight night, Aaron Hicks homered and struck out
twice in a Twins win over the Brewers. Hicks is the third Minnesota player in
the last 15 years to record a home run and two strikeouts in back-to-back
games. Trevor Plouffe and Josh Willingham both did it in May 2012.

Brothers had allowed a .181 career batting average with runners in scoring
position, tenth-best among active pitchers (minimum: 100 at-bats with runners
in scoring position).
