CHICAGO – Billy Hamilton (Double-A Pensacola) stole two more bases yesterday
and has 133 for the year. The minor league record is 145 by Vince Coleman in
1983.
Hamilton has 23 games left if he remains at Pensacola, which finishes its
season Sept. 3.
Manager Dusty Baker was asked before today’s Reds-Cubs game (2:20 p.m. ET)
if Hamilton’s speed might be a Reds asset come September call-up time.
“Possibly,” Baker said. “Speed’s always an asset. Speed kills.
I remember the Cardinals with Willie McGee, Vince Coleman and Ozzie (Smith).
Man. That was their slogan, speed kills.”

Baker said he has seen the stats on Hamilton, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and
160 pounds.
“Number one, you’ve got to get on base,” Baker said.
“Number two, you’ve got to have larceny in your veins.
Number three, you’ve got to be in excellent shape.”
Hamilton will turn 22 on Sept. 9.

Hamilton stole 103 bases last year at Low-A Dayton.
What about the fact that Hamilton’s stolen bases mostly have come in the low
minors?
“Doesn’t matter,” Baker said. “You’ve got to be able to play your
position.
You’ve got to be able to hit and get on base. You’ve got to be
fundamentally sound.
He’s come a long ways in a short period of time. You’ve got to have a total
game,
which he has, and he’s chipping off the rough edges around his game.”
Coleman’s record of 145 steals seems sure to fall. Baker said Hamilton
should aim high.
“Hey man, if I had a chance to get the record or you had a chance,
wouldn’t you be focusing on the record?” Baker said, smiling. “Why not?”
