First baseman Lance Berkman found it difficult to sleep Saturday night, not
because of resulting pain from a right knee injury but because of what may
result from Monday's finding.
The Cardinals and Berkman have yet to offer specifics about an injury caused
by Berkman stretching for a routine throw from shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Berkman felt continued stiffness in the leg Sunday afternoon and admitting
contemplating the range of problems that Monday's magnetic resonance imaging
might find.

Berkman said immediately after Saturday's game that he did feel a sensation
similar to what he experienced when he tore his right anterior cruciate
ligament in November 2005. Sunday, he couldn't dismiss the possibility and
its implications.

Manager Mike Matheny has counseled Berkman not to let his mind wander to a
worst-case scenario. Berkman initially said he thought it possible he had
merely torn his meniscus, an injury that requires weeks rather than months to
recover.
At 36, Berkman has pondered his career mortality before. He harbored
questions about his ability to hit following a disappointing two seasons that
led to his July 2010 trade to the New York Yankees. Berkman carries a love
for the game but has admitted the grind of preparing and maintaining his body
has become increasingly difficult.
"You think about it when you have a potentially major surgery at this stage
of your career. But, again, right now we don't know what it is. But it gives
you pause," he said. "I don't think it's one of those deals where you sit out
a week and see where your are. I think it's much more serious than that.
Always good for a parting shot, Berkman made sure Sunday's left room for a
sliver of optimism. "I've been through the ringer before," he said. "I'm
hopeful."
