Colby Lewis is Opening Day starter
Lewis开幕战先发!!!
ARLINGTON - More than a month before the start of spring training, Rangers
manager Ron Washington already has announced his intended opening day
pitcher: RHP Colby Lewis.
During a question-and-answer session with fans on the final day of Rangers
Fan Fest, Washington told fans that was his intention. He later said Japanese
RHP Yu Darvish would not start the opener - if he signs. The Rangers have
until Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT to sign Darvish.
Barring a health issue, it would appear the only thing that could change
Lewis' status would be the signing of veteran Roy Oswalt. If the Rangers sign
Oswalt, he would be a viable contender for the top spot.
If the Rangers add only Darvish, it's likely the rotation would look like
this:
RHP Colby Lewis
LHP Derek Holland
RHP Yu Darvish
LHP Matt Harrison
RHP Neftali Feliz
That scenario would have RHP Alexi Ogando heading back to the bullpen. The
switching of positions would seem a little unusual with Feliz moving from the
bullpen to the rotation and Ogando moving from the rotation to the bullpen.
But Washington said the club has committed to Feliz beginning the year as a
starter.
"We'll let everybody go as a starter at the beginning of spring," Washington
said. "We like the depth. About midway through, they may start to weed
themselves out. But you never know what you may need."
If the Rangers sign Oswalt, you could see a situation in which the club goes
this way with its rotation:
RHP Roy Oswalt
RHP Colby Lewis
LHP Derek Holland
RHP Yu Darvish
RHP Neftali Feliz
Under that scenario, Matt Harrison, who ranked in the top 10 among all
left-handed starters in the majors in most categories last year, would also
head back to the bullpen or potentially be traded to fill another need.
