The winner of the American League Cy Young Award will be announced Thursday
at 2 p.m. ET. Who should win the award? According to our panel of 74 ESPN
baseball experts, Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez is the clear
favorite, followed by New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia.
Our voters were asked which pitcher should win the award, and their totals
are listed below. Who gets your vote?
RANK PLAYER VOTES
1 Felix Hernandez, RHP, Seattle 62
How important are wins in the Cy Young voting? We'll find out. Despite a
13-12 record, King Felix was superior in most other major pitching
categories, including ERA, innings, quality starts and BAA.
2 CC Sabathia, LHP, NY Yankees 7
If it's not King Felix, it'll be Sabathia, with his league-leading 21 wins.
The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner was also second in innings pitched, sixth
in strikeouts and seventh in ERA.
3 Cliff Lee, LHP, Seattle/Texas 2
Lee's main calling card is his unbelievable K-BB ratio (185 to 18). He had
an August to forget, but was solid the rest of the season; he led the AL in
WHIP and tied for the lead in complete games.
OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Francisco Liriano, LHP, Minnesota (1); David Price,
LHP, Tampa Bay (1); Rafael Soriano, RHP, Tampa Bay (1).
