Juan Ignacio Chela has retired. The 33 year old published the news on his
Twitter account Monday, writing, “After many years it was time to move to
another stage in my life, I retire from professional tennis”.
Chela finishes his 14-year career on the ATP World Tour with 326-277 record.
He ascended to World No. 15 on 9 August 2004 and captured six titles from 12
finals. All of his triumphs occurred on outdoor clay, with his latest success
coming in Bucharest two years ago. He also lifted three doubles trophies.
The Argentine was a three-time major singles quarter-finalist, reaching the
last eight at Roland Garros in 2004 and 2011 and the US Open in 2007. He also
advanced to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2006, appeared in the
quarter-finals at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events on eight occasions and
was a doubles semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2010. Among his achievements,
Chela posted match wins against Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Lleyton Hewitt,
Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Tommy Haas, Tim
Henman and Fernando Gonzalez.
The Buenos Aires native played his final singles match at Wimbledon, falling
to Martin Klizan in an epic first-round thriller, losing to the Slovakian
11-9 in the deciding set.
