ACCORDING to Kit Chan, the idea of
doing an album of covers was raised a while ago, but she didn't fancy the
idea then. She's obviously changed her mind since. In her first album in over
six years, Kit puts her stamp on Cantonese, Mandarin and English songs such
as Leslie Cheung's Chase, Simon And Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water,
Mavis Hee's Regrets, and Michael Buble's Home - the last one also referencing
the Dick Lee composition she turned into a hit. Her sparse reimagining of the
songs works well for the most part, allowing her inimitable vocals to shine
through. And it's clear she hasn't lost her touch, often adding to the mood
of the songs with a deft inflection here or a lilt there. We can't say if
this signals a "comeback" for Kit, but we're certainly not complaining.
