The May 14 issue of Next magazine in Taiwan cited an email from the
Internal Revenue Service office at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing that
purported to show that a "Mark Y.J. Ma" owed U.S. taxes and alleged
that therefore President Ma Ying-jeou owed taxes to the U.S.
government. The Next article also linked the matter of alleged taxes
due by "Mark Y.J. Ma" and President Ma to the Foreign Account Tax
Compliance Act.
We have previously been informed that President Ma Ying-Jeou's
abandonment of his former legal permanent resident status has long
been included in appropriate U.S. immigration system records.
This issue is therefore closed.
The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act(FATCA) concerns the reporting
of financial account information of U.S. taxpayers by foreign
financial institutions. FATCA does not change or expand the class
of persons treated as U.S. taxpayers that are subject to U.S.
income tax on a worldwide basis.
