I have had too many talks in my short little life with people that
imagine Taiwan to be some sort of island with hardly any economic
development. You know it's really bad too when you get people from Shanghai
wondering how Taiwan can survive with their very "fragile" and undeveloped
economy. Some People I have talked to imagine Taiwan to be almost as
developed as the most rural parts of Mexico (I'm talking about Yucatan and
those other pesky southern Mexican states).
在我不长的一生当中，我已经有太多次和这样的人谈论，他们认为台湾是一个没有任
何经济发展的小岛。你知道，这真的很糟糕，当你得知上海人很诧异台湾怎么能够在这么
“脆弱”和不发达的经济中生存。和我交谈过的一些人，他们想像中的台湾，开发度最多
是和墨西哥的乡下地区类似（我说的是尤卡坦半岛和其他那些令人讨厌的墨西哥南部州）

Maybe it is just me that keeps running and interacting with people that
view Taiwan as an extremely backwards place. By all means the island of
Taiwan is not perfect and still has a long way to go towards development, but
the idea of taking a trip there for a week or two seems to scare the most
ardent of the naive individuals.
可能这只是我接触和交往的人，他们视台湾为一个极度落后的地区。无论如何台湾这
个岛并不完美，离发达还有很长一段路要走，但是去那里旅游一两周的想法似乎把大多数
没出过远门的人都吓跑了。
Here are some main concerns that arise when I mention Taiwan.

- Is it very dangerous?
- Do they eat snake and other exotic animals?
- Do the locals want to marry foreigners just so that they can get a
foreign residence permit?
- What awful tropical diseases are there?
- Does anyone speak English?

I'm surprised that I still encounter people like this with these types of
ideas. I suppose people's perspectives for cities like Shanghai are slowly
changing, as Shanghai is seen as a very lucrative city. I still just don't
quite understand why the perspective of Taiwan is still seen as poor place,
but I would imagine it is because it doesn't attract as much media attention
as China's surging growth does.
我很惊讶，我仍然遇到这样有类似想法的人。我想，人们对于像上海这样的城市的观
念正在慢慢改变，因为上海被视为一个非常能赚钱的城市。我还不是很明白，为什么对于
台湾的看法还仍然是一个贫困地区，但是我可以想像，这是因为台湾并不如中国的快速增
长那样吸引大量媒体的关注。
As much as I think it's silly, these type of perceptions do little good
for the Taiwanese economy. It's not good for companies that want to consider
foreign investment into Taiwan nor is it good for the reputation of Taiwanese
universities and Taiwanese companies themselves.
就像我认为这是无知的，这些看法对台湾经济没有多少好处。这对那些考虑外国投资
进入台湾的公司没有好处，对台湾的大学和台湾公司自身的声誉也没有好处。
Maybe I'm the only one who feels that I run into people that are a bit
clueless about Taiwan. Do any of you share similar feelings?
