The French government plans to increase offshore wind capacity
to 18GW in 2035 and 45GW in 2050, according to a ministerial
announcement in Saint Nazaire yesterday.

Energy Minister Bruno Le Maire said the government would support
the acceleration of offshore wind in France, where the country’s
first utility-scale offshore wind farm, the 480MW Saint Nazaire
project, was commissioned in 2022. The 497MW Fecamp and 496MW
Saint-Brieuc projects are both due to be fully commissioned by
the end of June; and five more fixed-bottom schemes are due to
complete by 2031.

He made the commitment to reach 45GW by 2050 at the signing of
a €4.5bn contract between French transmission system operator
Réseau de Transport d’Electricité, Chantiers de l’Atlantique
and Hitachi for the supply of offshore substations for offshore
wind farms.
