Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena once again found himself under fire on
Thursday after he apparently used the Ukrainian invasion by Russia to promote
his HBO Max show.
Just hours after Russia invaded Ukraine following a months-long buildup of
troops on the Russian-Ukrainian border, Cena tweeted: 'If I could somehow
summon the powers of a real life #Peacemaker, I think this would be a great
time to do so,' referencing the titular character of his HBO Max show.
The character he debuted in James Gunn's 2021 film 'The Suicide Squad' is
known for being brash and jingoistic, but is committed to brokering peace at
all costs - even if that means using extreme violence.
Cena's tweet was widely seen as tone-deaf after Russian forces' bombing of
major cities - including the capital, Kyiv - at President Vladimir Putin's
command resulted in dozens of deaths.
'Real people are dying right now, and you’re using their deaths to promote a
f****** tv show? Really?' one Twitter user, Lori Smith, wrote.

say this, especially now,' and Sam Haft, a voice actor, commented: 'I feel
like I shouldn’t have to explain this to you but the power of Peacemaker is
murdering people.'
One user, Average Harry, said '(I) can't believe you tweeted this,' while
Smith wrote: 'You should have been able to summon enough common sense to know
this tweet was crass, stupid and in poor taste.'
Dennis Owens, meanwhile, harped on the former wrestling star, tweeting: 'You
have shown the depth of your character.
'Go back to rubbing baby oil on your chest and prancing around in your
underwear.'
Cena has not yet commented about the backlash.

But he previously came under fire when he bowed down to Chinese Communist
Party interests and apologized for calling Taiwan a country.
Many Democratic countries around the world consider Taiwan an independent
country with its own government, but the United States has always done a
delicate dance by supporting it with aide and military, without overtly going
against Beijing, which considers Taiwan a territory.
But in May, Cena found himself in the middle of the controversy while
promoting his role in the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise
on a Taiwanese network.
He said in Mandarin, which he learned to promote his wrestling career
internationally, at the time: 'Taiwan is the first country that can watch F9.'

After seeing his video, Chinese fans and government officials expressed their
ire that Cena, who had received millions from his movies airing in China, did
not consider Taiwan a territory.
They slammed him on Weibo - often called the 'Chinese Twitter' - and
threatened to boycott the movie franchise in response to his comments.
'Fast & Furious can say goodbye! WWE star John Cena (Xina Zhao) said that
Taiwan is the first "country" where you can see "F9". He has studied Chinese
for so many years and said that he loves China very much. This mistake really
shouldn't happen,' one said.
Cena, feeling the heat of the criticism from Chinese fans, later recorded an
apology video in which he claimed he made a mistake.

He groveled: 'Hi China, I’m John Cena.
'I’m in the middle of Fast and Furious 9 promotions. I’m doing a lot of
interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews.
'Everyone was asking me if I could use Chinese – [movie] staff gave me a lot
of information, so there was a lot of interviews and information.
'I made one mistake. I have to say something very, very, very important now.
'I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my
mistake.
'I apologize, I apologize, I’m very sorry.
'You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese
people. My apologies. See you.'
The video was played 2.4 million times on the strictly-controlled social
media site, while Chinese media leapt on the apology.
