He was once a prominent Asian-American in New York City politics.
Now, James C. Jao, a former City Planning Commissioner, sits in a
California jail awaiting extradition to New York to stand trial on
charges that he defrauded a co-op in Rego Park and jumped bail.

Mary de Bourbon, a spokeswoman for the Queens District Attorney,
Richard A. Brown, said Mr. Jao had failed to appear for a May 13
court date and was arrested by United States Customs agents last
week in San Francisco after returning from a business trip to
China.

In June 1995, Mr. Jao, who owned two apartments in the Walden

counts, including grand larceny. He is accused of defrauding the
co-op of $41,000 while serving as treasurer and president from
1989 to 1992.

Mr. Jao is also accused of using $100,000 from the board's capital

he was a planning commissioner. Mr. Jao offered to repay the $
41,000, but the board refused pending a civil lawsuit. If
convicted of grand larceny, Mr. Jao could face 15 years in prison.

Ms. de Bourbon said that although prosecutors had asked Mr. Jao to
surrender his passport, his lawyers persuaded Justice Vincent F.
Naro of State Supreme Court in Queens to allow him to travel to
China because of his substantial business interests there. Since
the early 1990's, Mr. Jao has been one of the leading foreign
businessmen in China, helping build skyscrapers and design a
transportation system.

Mr. Brown's office said Mr. Jao had kept previous court dates and
had advised prosecutors of his travel plans up to April 30. Mr.
Jao was declared a fugitive after failing to show up on May 13.
Ms. de Bourbon said that in addition to forfeiting the $25,000
bond he had posted, Mr. Jao would be charged with bail jumping.
Barry J.Teller, a lawyer for Mr. Jao, declined to comment.
Mr. Jao came to prominence in the Koch administration and was
widely praised for his role in the first comprehensive zoning and
planning study of Chinatown and the first zoning study of downtown
Flushing. After leaving public office, Mr. Jao remained active in
politics, counseling city and state officials and helping them
foster economic ties with Asian countries. JANE H. LII

1.先声明,不知道这位James Jao是不是就是中天新闻里的大师,
坦白说,我个人觉得最好不是。虽然官司也许平安下庄,
但毕竟还是有争议。
2.很厉害啊,1990年就已经在中国搞建筑跟都市计画,
刚好韩市长现在要引进陆资买房子,找这人来,刚刚好。
3.换个角度想,韩市长都说圣人难找了,
找这位老兄来,如果真的是这位老兄,可能也是蛮不错的。
4.另外要解释一下,co-op这个概念台湾不知道有没有,
基本上就是地主把房子拿出来充当合作住宅,不以营利为目的,
而是让社经条件比较弱势的人,以负担得起的方式共同承租物业。
有理想一点的co-op,房客甚至会组织直接民主性质的管理委员会,
每个礼拜开家庭会议,共同采买、共同消费
简单说来,就是台湾最近在吵的公共国宅的更理想化的版本。
小弟在米帝住过一年多,好的坏的看得不少,
如果连这种公共住宅计画都能挤得出油水,
那这位James Jao真的是不简单的人物。
