Chinese scientists have built the world's first quantum computing machine th
at goes beyond the early conventional or classical computers, paving way to
the realisation of quantum computing .

Scientists announced their achievement at the Shanghai Institute for Advance
d Studies of University of Science and Technology of China on Wednesday, Xin
hua news agency reported.
中国科学技术大学上海研究院的科学家们在周三(5月3号)公布了这一消息,新华社报
道。
They believe quantum computing could in some ways dwarf the processing power
of supercomputers. One analogy to explain the concept of quantum computing
is that it is like being able to read all the books in a library at the same
time, whereas conventional computing is like having to read them one after
another.
他们认为量子计算在某种程度上削弱了传统超级计算机的竞争力。用一个比喻,就是传
统计算机读取一个图书馆时得一本接一本得读,而量子计算可以同时读取整个图书馆。
Pan Jianwei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a leading
quantum physicist, said quantum computing exploits the fundamental quantum
superposition principle to enable ultra-fast parallel calculation and simula
tion capabilities.
中国科学院院士、量子物理学家潘建伟说量子计算的超快速度来源于量子叠加态原理。
In normal silicon computer chips, data is rendered in one of two states: 0 o
r 1. However, in quantum computers, data could exist in both states simultan
eously, holding exponentially more information.
传统计算机在计算中数据只能呈现两种状态中的一种:0或1。而在量子计算中,数据能
够同时存在0和1两种状态。当数据同时存在0和1两种状态,那么数据能够承载更多的信
息。
The computing power of a quantum computer grows exponentially with the numbe
r of quantum bits that can be manipulated. This could effectively solve larg
e-scale computation problems that are beyond the ability of current classica
l computers, Pan said. Due to the enormous potential of quantum computing, E
urope and the US are actively collaborating in their research. High-tech com
panies, such as Google , Microsoft and IBM, also have massive interests in q
uantum computing research.
量子计算机的计算能力与可操纵的量子比特数成指数增长。这能够有效地解决大规模的
计算问题,超出了目前的经典计算机的能力,潘建伟说说。由于量子计算的巨大潜力,
欧洲和美国正积极合作。谷歌、微软和IBM等公司也对量子计算研究有着浓厚的兴趣。
The research team is exploring three technical routes: systems based on sing
le photons, ultra-cold atoms and superconducting circuits.

Pan explained that manipulation of multi-particle entanglement is the core o
f quantum computing technology and has been the focus of international compe
tition in quantum computing research.

In the photonic system, his team has achieved the first 5, 6, 8 and 10 entan
gled photons in the world and is at the forefront of developments.

Pan said quantum computers could, in principle, solve certain problems faste
r than classical computers.

Despite substantial progress in the past two decades, building quantum machi
nes that can actually outperform classical computers in some specific tasks
