注：歌词描述1971年Deep Purple在瑞士录制Machine Head专辑时所发生的真实
事件。
当时Deep Purple向the Rolling Stones租借了他们的移动录音室（歌词中称之
为mobile或the Rolling truck Stones），并下榻在日内瓦湖畔的蒙特勒赌场
（蒙特勒爵士音乐节(Montreux Jazz Festival)的举办场地），打算在那里录音。
某晚当Frank Zappa和他的乐团The Mothers of Invention在赌场的剧院表演时，
观众中有人发射信号枪（flare gun），导致场地失火。蒙特勒爵士音乐节的主办人
Claude Nobs（即词中所称的Funky Claude）急忙抢救观众；赌场烧毁，浓烟弥漫
在日内瓦湖水面。
由于蒙特勒赌场已然烧毁，Deep Purple只好另觅可录音的场地，但事情并不顺
利。最终在一个星期后，才落脚在没什么客人的蒙特勒酒店（即词中之Grand
Hotel），录制了这首Smoke on the Water。
