Sydney passenger risks life to tap off Opal card during bus inferno
A PASSENGER has gone to extreme lengths to ensure he tapped off his Opal card
at the end of his journey — climbing back inside a burning bus to avoid
being overcharged.
Transport investigators examining a bus fire on the Sydney Harbour Bridge
last September were shocked to make the discovery while reviewing CCTV
footage captured from inside the vehicle.
After the 22 passengers were evacuated within 15 seconds of stopping, a man
could be seen hurrying back inside the burning bus in order to tap off his
Opal card to ensure he was not charged the maximum daily fare.
Action For Public Transport campaigner Jim Donovan said while the man might
have though he was saving a few dollars performing the deadly act, it was
likely all in vain.
“The Opal readers will only allow people to tap off when the bus is at a
stop,” he told Fairfax Meida.
“This person should obviously just have stayed well clear in any case.”
Firefighters were called to Milsons Point after the bus burst into flames.
The fire was extinguished soon after they arrived on scene and the burnt
wreckage was removed.
All the passengers escaped safely, although three were treated for minor
smoke inhalation.
Preliminary investigations suggested an electrical problem in the engine bay
was to blame for the incident.
A final report into the fire will be released in the next fortnight.
