事实上，制造商每年生产出三十亿条牛仔裤呢！
但是生产一个经典的蓝染牛仔裤，其实对环境有很大的影响，
像是在蓝染过程中产出有毒化学物质。
“如果你直接把他丢到溪里，很多丹宁布料生产线是这样做的，
会杀死河里面的很多鱼唷Q__Q！”柏克莱研究员约翰肚勃博士说。
为了让生产过程更干净，
肚勃跟他加州大学的团队设计出了一套截然不同的蓝染程序！
不使用石化蓝染成分，他们改用植物成分─是20世纪之前就被使用的蓝染材料的腻！
There's no doubting America's love affair with blue jeans.
In fact, manufacturers churn out roughly three billion pairs a year.
But producing that classic, indigo blue also comes with a major environmental
challenge,
disposing of a toxic chemical used in the dying process.
"If you simply throw it in streams, which is done in many denim dying
facilities,
it kills the fish in the rivers," says Berkeley researcher John Dueber, Ph.D.
To clean up the process, Dueber and his team at the University of California
set out make indigo dye in a new and different way.
Instead of the current petroleum based formula, they turned to plants,
the original source of indigo before the 20th century.
