The seventh seed next faces German Nicolas Kiefer, who upset No. 4 Nikolay
Davydenko 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Blake has won all three of their previous meetings
in straight sets, most recently in 2007 en route to a runner-up finish at the
ATP Masters Series event in Cincinnati.
The 30-year-old Kiefer, himself a former World No. 4, improves to a 34-69
lifetime and 3-4 season record against Top 10 players. This year, he posted
wins against No. 10 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 4 Davydenko at Masters Series
Hamburg.
Kiefer has reached the Canada semifinals twice in his previous eight
appearances. He defeated No. 2 Patrick Rafter in the 1999 quarterfinals
before losing to Thomas Johansson, and reached the final four again in 2004
with wins over Marat Safin, David Ferrer and No. 4 Carlos Moya (l. to
Roddick).
