Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers expects first-round pick
Patrick Baldwin Jr. to make the Warriors’ 15-man roster this fall. Many
assumed that much. However, it came as a surprise when Myers proclaimed that
19-year-old Toledo guard Ryan Rollins, whom the team traded up to get at No.
44 on Thursday night, is in position to do the same.

That’s pretty high praise for a young guard who somewhat flew under the
radar throughout the predraft process, now joining a championship-caliber
team in San Francisco loaded with veteran talent in the backcourt. And it has
given the rookie an injection of confidence as he embarks on his professional
career.

“It means a lot,” Rollins said. “I guess it just shows that (Bob) believes
in what I believe, and I believe in myself a lot. So just having someone in
the front office believe in me ... I just really needed the opportunity

It was Rollins’ ability to create shots that ultimately convinced the
Warriors to trade up and snag him midway through the second round. Myers said
the team didn’t necessarily need a backup point guard, but when Rollins was
still on the board at that point in the draft, his talent and upside were too
much to resist.

guy we had was pretty high. And that’s why we made the move to try to get up
to 44.”

Rollins’ potential is intriguing on film. He’s a quality scorer with a
tight handle who can make shots from all over the court, even though his
3-point shot will have to develop in the NBA. His craftiness off the dribble
allows him to get to his spots; he has an advanced understanding of the
pick-and-roll. And his 36.5-inch vertical jump and 6-foot-10 wingspan allows
him to get his shot off over taller defenders.

“I’ve been around different groups and different teams my whole life, so I
think some of my best skills is just being adaptable and being versatile,”
Rollins said. “I think if you know how to play basketball, you know how to
play basketball. It really doesn’t matter who you’re with, you have to
figure out how to play with them, learn the system, learn their strengths,
learn their weaknesses and just put them in position to be successful, and I
think I’m good at that.”

Rollins can play on or off the ball, which should ease his transition into
the Warriors’ system given how ball-dominant Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson
and Jordan Poole can be at times. And while he isn’t the most athletic guard
in this year’s class, he plays with intensity on defense, and his length
presents upside at that end of the court. And for whatever else Rollins may
lack, he makes up for it with confidence. When asked about cracking the
Warriors’ 15-man roster, he said he doesn’t think it will be too difficult.

Last season at Toledo, Rollins ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference
in both scoring (18.9 points per game) and steals (1.7 per game) and 13th in
rebounding (6 per game). He was named to the 2021-22 All-MAC team and was
also a NABC All-District 14 First Team selection as a sophomore.

knows he’s far from a finished product. For starters, he needs to get
stronger and improve his 3-point accuracy. But he arrives in San Francisco
with an open mind, and embraces the opportunity to further develop his game.

Will Santos get stashed?
Gui Santos, whom Golden State drafted out of Brazil with the 55thpick,
said he would prefer to play for the Warriors this season
because he’ll have the right resources at his disposal to improve quickly.
And although the final decision isn’t up to him, he believes he has the
skill set to contribute now.
“My experience, my energy, I’m a versatile guy,” Santos said. “I can play
both sides of the court. I can drive, I can shoot. I can do what the team
wants me to do. If they tell me to do one thing, I’ll do it.”

Adding depth:
The Warriors agreed to a two-way contract with
undrafted Memphis guard Lester Quinones on Thursday night.
The 6-foot-5 guard is a high-level shooter
who averaged 10 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals
per game last year for Penny Hardaway and the Tigers.
He shot 39.0% on 3-point attempts and 53.8% inside the arc.
