Dancing bear is the best book I have read in 2018.
The book mainly describes the transitional justice in Bulgaria.
The narrator voice in the book is very approachable.
Dancing bear is a century-old tradition of Gypsies.
The bear was kidnapped when they were only a few months old to live with the bear trainer.
It hasn't been legal since Bulgaria joined the EU.
The book mentions the many problems the dancing bears faced after they were liberated by the EU.
My favorite paragraphs read:
Every day when they experience the pain brought by their freedom, they will stand on two feet to dance.
What they are repeating is exactly the behaviors that the conservation staff wants to erase at all costs.
They return to their habits as slaves and cry out for the bear trainers to take the responsibilities of living away once again.
