Stumble upon "Just the Fact" on today's ICRT.
I don't listen to radio. (Come on! Radio is literally the invention of last
century.) Somehow I found myself listening to the program tonight and ended
up weeping. It was about a violinist/Doctor using his music to treat his
patient. At first, he talked about his career and recent finding about neuron
science. Interestingly, brain wires DIFFERENTLY between musicians and people
who don't do music often. Music therpy do sometimes have exactly the same
effect as medical treatment. Afterward, He moved on to Cochlear implant.
Cochlear implant can greatly improve the life of those hearing chanlleged.
Yet it's only for speech purpose. The sound quality suffers. This electronic
device simply doesn't deliver music. However, a person obsessed with music
won't lost his perfect ability to percept music. Just as Beethoven could
still write masterpieces after his hearing loss.
At the moment a record of piano music played by a hearing challenged person,
who doesn't receive a cochlear implant, was being broadcasted, I cried. I
knew instantly it was Chopin Nocturne No.1 Op.9. I used to played it a long
time ago. I tried to imagine what it will be like if I lost my hearing and
play this song solely based on the feeling of the touch of keys. God, It's
unbearable.
