PL2 report: Chelsea 2 Leicester City 2
01 OCT 2022
Our development squad shared the spoils at home in Saturday's lunchtime
game at Kingsmeadow. Charlie Webster and Omari Hutchinson found the
scoresheet.

Despite going ahead twice in the contest, our young Blues were unable to
hold onto leads as Leicester equalised twice through Kasey McAteer
With the game starting very slowly, we broke the deadlock with just under
20 minutes played in the game as good work from Elliott allowed Webster to
sweep calmly beyond the goalkeeper.
There were chances for Ben Elliott and Mason Burstow as we looked to
double our lead but undeservedly so, we conceded a long-range effort from
McAteer which looked like an attempted cross.

We did not let this affect us as we remained on top even after conceding
and soon after we found our second through Hutchinson who was able to
shoot unmarked in the box after a good cross from Dylan Williams.
The second half saw the away side show greater intent and they created a
number of chances to equalise. They eventually found their goal through
McAteer again who took advantage of our miscommunication by striking past
Eddie Beach on the edge of the box.
That was how the game would end as our development squad have to settle
for a point in the first back after the international break.
== Team news ==
There two changes to the side that drew 3-3 against Crystal Palace in the
PL2 as Josh Brooking and Webster came into the side. The bench also
featured some younger personnel as the likes of Max Merrick, Michael
Golding and Noah Hay were all included in the matchday squad.

Alfie Gilchrist captained the side in the absence of Bashir Humphreys and
Josh Brooking came into the starting line-up
== Cagey start ==
The opening 15 minutes of the game saw both sides keep possession in very
brief spells without troubling each other's defences.
There was a shot on goal from Dion Rankine who cut in well, but his effort
fell safely in the hands of the young Foxes' shot-stopper. Besides that,
attempts on goal were few and far between as both sides seemed content to
be secure in possession.
== Moment of quality ==
It was going to take a moment of quality to break the deadlock and our
development squad duly delivered as Elliott broke clear and with defenders
scrambling back, he did well to hold the ball up and wait for support and
find the onrushing Webster who swept the ball home. A good goal to mark
his return to the starting line-up.

Charlie Webster opened the scoring
It did not take long for us to almost double our lead as a lovely floated
cross from Hutchinson found Burstow at the back post, but his header was
pushed away by keeper Odunze.
We were in firm control of the contest and two quick chances in succession
underlined this. Abu headed strongly into the path of Burstow who powered
a shot goalwards, but it was met firmly by the palms of Odunze.
Burstow was involved again as he was slid in down the right-hand side of
the box, and he fired in a low cross which only just missed Elliott with
the goal gaping.
== Good response to brief setback ==
It was unfortunate as despite our fine work against the run of play, the
away side found their leveller as McAteer picked up the ball from the
left-hand side of the pitch with what looked like a cross, he found the
back of the net.
We maintained the pressure that saw us take the lead even despite their
goal and we were pushing for our second of the game. Webster found himself
in a great spot where he fired across goal while in the box, but Burstow
could not reach the cross to convert.
We doubled our lead, and it was what our play deserved as good work down
the left saw Hutchinson latch onto a Williams cross and find the bottom
corner of the net. This was Hutchinson's third goal in two games.

Omari Hutchinson put us back in front with a well-struck volley
== Searching for the third ==
Our young Blues were combining well, and it was clear that we were playing
with confidence. Burstow flicked round the corner to set Elliott free. His
chipped ball to the back-post found Rankine whose first-time lay-off found
Hutchinson who only just missed the target with his swivelled half-volley.
Immediately after this, Lewis Hall intercepted and broke into the box,
whipping a delightful cross onto the head of Burstow, but the young
striker headed wide from close range.
The second half started in a similar manner to the first as both sides
looked comfortable in possession. Nonetheless it was the young Foxes who
had the first chance of the second period, and they should have equalised
as striker Tawanda Maswanhise was played in on goal, but Beach made
himself big and made an excellent save.
== Under pressure ==
There were a few nervy moments that our young Blues had to endure. First
through Brooking who as the last man did well to not foul his marker and
win the ball with a last-ditch challenge despite being on the wrong side
to begin with.
Following this Braybrooke smashed a free-kick onto the crossbar as for the
first time in the game, the away side were looking the more confident of
the two teams.
We worked our way back into the contest and Elliott almost settled the tie
as he danced his way into the box and tried to bend the ball beyond Odunze
but the keeper saved well with a strong left foot. Hall picked up the
loose ball and his deflected effort just fell wide of the post.

Lewis Hall went close with a deflected effort in the second period of the
game
After a long stoppage in play following some substitutions, our young
Blues were caught out in the restart as McAteer found space on the edge of
the box and place the ball beyond Beach to grab his second of the game.
Chris Popov almost found the winner for the away team as he found space in
the middle of the box but despite being unmarked, he could only steer his
header wide of the goal. We could not find the game-winning goal as the
match ended 2-2.
The fixtures come thick and fast for our development squad as they face a
trip to Oxford United in the Papa Johns Trophy this coming Tuesday.
