Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Debut win for Colwill, dramatic victories for
Slonina and McClelland
08 Aug 2022
The opening day of the Premier League season provided a top-flight debut
to remember, while there was high drama involving Chelsea loanees in the
Football League and overseas.

Levi Colwill's Premier League debut for Brighton & Hove Albion arrived in
tense but ultimately successful circumstances in their opening fixture
away at Manchester United on Sunday. The defender came off the bench late
on as Brighton attempted to withstand an onslaught from United at Old
Trafford, but Colwill and his new team-mates held out for a memorable 2-1
opening day victory over the Red Devils.
Ian Maatsen and Burnley continued their unbeaten start in the Championship
by recovering for a draw with Luton Town. Despite going behind from a
corner after just five minutes, Burnley had the majority of possession at
Turf Moor, although their second-half equaliser came from their only shot
on target as they secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Tino Anjorin made his first start of the season for Huddersfield Town on
Friday evening as they travelled to Birmingham City, but the Terriers
suffered their second loss in a row as two first-half goals gave the Blues
a 2-1 win.

Lucas Bergstrom made his home debut for Peterborough United and couldn't
have asked for it to go much better. Playing only his second game in
senior football, following last week's opening day win for the Posh,
Bergstrom claimed his first clean sheet at this level in what turned out
to be a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Morecambe in League One.
Peterborough took an early lead after nine minutes, but it needed a
crucial save from the young goalkeeper shortly afterwards to maintain
their advantage, before the home team raced away in the second half. That
result puts Peterborough top of the table at this early stage, as the only
side to have won both of their opening two games.
Also in League One, fellow goalkeeper Jamie Cumming didn't enjoy such a
pleasant afternoon in a frustrating match for MK Dons, with Henry Lawrence
an unused substitute. Cumming made a big save shortly before half-time,
but couldn't stop Sheffield Wednesday taking a narrow lead from the
penalty spot. Despite some promising chances, the Dons couldn't find an
equaliser and suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Sam McClelland came off the bench early on to play his part in a dramatic
Barrow win in League Two. Barrow and Bradford exchanged quick-fire goals
on the hour mark before McClelland, who had been introduced after 15
minutes, got his head to a corner and the ball was scrambled in to give
his side the lead with five minutes remaining. There was plenty more to
come, though, as Bradford equalised in the fifth minute of injury time,
only for Barrow to score almost immediately and claim a 3-2 win.
Gabriel Slonina was involved in a thrilling victory for Chicago Fire at
Charlotte, as they recorded back-to-back away wins for the first time
since 2013. The visitors fought back well with two goals in quick
succession after going behind in the first minute, but the scores were
levelled on the stroke of half-time. Chicago restored their lead shortly
after the break, though, and Slonina helped them hold that lead to win 3-2.
