Enthusiastic Hudson-Odoi had no issues whatsoever with his Young Lions
call-up despite having two senior caps already. And there was nothing but
pride when Blues pals Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham made Gareth
Southgate's squad.
The pair, along with Mason Mount, Hudson-Odoi and 21s team-mate Reece
James, have flourished in Lampard's youthful revolution at Stamford Bridge
this term. Abraham has been the face of Frank's fledglings at Stamford
Bridge with his eight Premier League goals making him the division's joint
top-scorer along with Sergio Aguero.
And the breakthrough campaign of Abraham, who was prolific during
Championship loan spells to Bristol City and Aston Villa, comes as no
surprise to his younger colleague.
Hudson-Odoi said: “I told him from the start, 'Listen, you are top
player, you have scored so many goals at whatever team you've been to'. I
told him if he came in with the same desire to score goals he will score
because he has the willingness to score goals.
“We always try to get the best out of each other and I have told him that
if he ever needs to chat to me about anything then I am here and likewise
he tells me. We like to have a good bond on the pitch, but also off it.
I'm really pleased for him.”
That bond is clear, not just between Hudson-Odoi and Abraham, but for all
the youngsters breaking into the Chelsea first team this season. It is
particularly strong for Hudson-Odoi with players from his fellow age group
that won the 2018 FA Youth Cup like James.
Another from that side is Connor Gallagher, shining on loan at Charlton,
who was yesterday called up to Aidy Boothroyd's squad for Friday's
friendly in Slovenia and Tuesday's Euro qualifier against Austrian in
Milton Keynes.
Hudson-Odoi added: “We all want to do well for each other. I wouldn't say
playing with them in the Chelsea first team is like a kickabout in the
park, more like a good day out with the boys. We have a good bond because
we have been together for so long. We all know each other so it is a good
vibe.”
Lampard's hand was forced in the summer by Chelsea's transfer ban - yet
the England legend must take credit for how he has nurtured the Blues kids
so quickly.
Hudson-Odoi explained the 41-year-old's “constructive” criticism is a
big factor - perhaps in contrast to predecessor Maurizio Sarri, where the
teenager found chances limited.
The winger, who signed a fresh five-year contract last month worth up to
￡180,000 a week, said: “He is an amazing manager. He loves to boost the
players. He tells you if you are doing well. If you are not doing well he
will tell you as well so you can work on your game and improve, but it is
never bad criticism, it is always constructive.
“We can go to him and he will tell us what we need to do to become better
players. We like that from a manager. He gives us opportunities to ask
questions if we are not happy. It's a nice feeling to have around the camp
to know we have a manager who can speak about it.”
