========
Dear child, good morning!
Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year. Early this morning at 7:00, my
80-year-old father woke me up and spent nearly an hour sharing his thoughts
on life. It gave me some valuable insights, and I thought I’d share them
with you.
Recently, I came across a quote that really resonated with me: "Your
awareness determines your height, and your awareness determines how you make
money." I thought more about it and came to the conclusion that it can be
expanded as follows:
‧ Experience shapes awareness.
‧ Awareness builds logic.
‧ Logic influences decisions.
‧ Decisions lead to outcomes.
‧ Outcomes create new experiences, starting the next cycle.
The chairman of the company I work for is about the same age as my father. So
why are their lives so different? Both innate talent and environment play a
role, but ultimately, the way they viewed the world early in life shaped how
they earn money.
The broader your awareness, the more tools you have at your disposal, and the
more ways you can earn money.
So, how can we expand our experience and raise our awareness? Here are a few
suggestions:
1. Read more books Reading helps you absorb the wisdom of others. In the
past, printed books were the main source of knowledge. Today, the internet
offers a faster way to learn. Take AI for example: with the recent buzz
around DeepSeep, by the time books on it are published, it’s already
outdated. Discussions online and professional content on YouTube or Bilibili
are much quicker sources of new information. I no longer rely on TV news as
my primary source of knowledge—it's mostly for big events like wildfires in
California or typhoons in Japan.
Everyone uses the internet, but don't just spend your time scrolling through
TikTok or watching K-dramas. Instead, focus on content that stimulates your
brain and encourages critical thinking.
2. Try different types of jobs For many people, work is just about earnin
g
paycheck. If you rely on a specialized profession, like being a doctor or
engineer, you’re likely set for life. But most people can’t rely solely on
a salary to live the life they want, especially in today’s high-cost
society. Salaries will only get harder to live on. Therefore, it’s crucial
to break out of the salary-based work model and find multiple ways to earn
money.
This doesn't just expose you to different ways of thinking across industries,
but it also helps you learn new skills. For instance, I've worked as a
photographer, sold mooncakes, taught, and even worked on construction sites.
As a photographer, I learned to appreciate aesthetics and focus on details
and creativity. Selling mooncakes taught me the challenges of sales and
improved my communication skills. Teaching helped me learn how to simplify
complex ideas and tailor my approach to different students. Working on a
construction site built my resilience and ability to make quick decisions.
These experiences gave me different perspectives, which have greatly helped
in my career decisions.
3. Travel to different places There’s an old saying: "Reading ten thousa
nd
books is not as useful as traveling ten thousand miles." While it might sound
a bit exaggerated, there’s some truth to it. Traveling has allowed me to
witness various architectural wonders, experience diverse social cultures,
and taste different foods. These experiences have prevented me from limiting
myself to a single cultural perspective and have helped me realize that life
offers many possibilities. For example, after visiting the U.S., I gained a
deeper understanding of racial tolerance and the laid-back approach to life.
Traveling to Southeast Asia made me more aware of the subtle pressures in
Chinese societies. These experiences have broadened my horizons and opened my
eyes to many more ways of living.
But remember, don’t rely on group tours, which are mostly about eating,
drinking, and sightseeing with little benefit. Independent travel is the kind
of deep, brain-stimulating experience that really adds value.
4. Interact with a variety of people Every person is like a unique book,
an
getting to know them allows you to see different perspectives. This is one of
life’s toughest lessons. The more people you meet, the better you’ll
understand what truly interests you. It’s like picking a restaurant—you'll
always find a favorite local spot with the best flavors and the most charming
owner. This takes time and experience, and you’ll need to learn to
distinguish who brings positive energy and who doesn’t. Avoid negative
people as their mindset can limit your growth. Always try to consider others'
perspectives—it not only improves their lives but will also be beneficial
for your own future.
To sum up, I know you’re a thoughtful, money-minded, and ambitious person,
so I hope you will:
‧ Read more and absorb new knowledge: Learn the various ways to earn mon
ey
‧ Try different types of work: Observe how others make a living.
‧ Travel to new places: Discover opportunities to make money.
‧ Meet different people: When making friends, look for long-term growth,
n
just short-term benefits. Those who give you fish are temporary, but those
who teach you to fish will be your lifelong mentors.
I hope you find your life’s direction and grow up happy and safe!
