What Is the Study of the Mind?
The mind is infinite and inexhaustible. It is neither excessive nor deficient.
As it is said, ‘The mind encompasses all of space and pervades worlds as man
y as the sand grains of the Ganges River.’ This is the function of the mind.
However, we must realize that although the mind's function is vast and subtle
to the absolute extreme, we must first examine and study its minute aspects. I
f we don't understand the minute aspects, we won't be able to understand the v
ast and subtle principles.
Therefore, we must understand how every mental state creates a karmic response
. Whatever mental state you have, you’ll receive whatever retribution. If you
plant a good cause, you'll receive a good fruition. If you plant a bad cause,
you'll receive a bad result. What is a good cause? It's a good thought. When
a good thought arises in your mind, that’s a good cause. When you have a bad
thought, then that's a bad cause. (revised by Katherine Wang and reviewed by M
