before the season opener, a seven-year extension that covers 2024 and guarantees
Kim between $130 million and $150 million seems like it could do the trick. Bar
ring subtractions, it also would mean committing more than $160 million in luxur
y tax payroll to only 10 players in 2025. (The Padres likely would prefer an ext
ension to officially begin next year, as that would defer a large increase to Ki
m’s average annual value for luxury tax purposes.)
