Reportedly, Mengden actually signed a contract with Arizona earlier this week, b
ut his Mexican team refused to give up his rights.
Because Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos refused to give up Mengden's rights, Major
League Baseball made the Diamondbacks void the deal.
It appears the ground the Mexican team is standing on is a $100,000 buyout claus
e in Mengden's contract. The implication, although Burke doesn't specifically sp
ell it out, is that the Diamondbacks tried to get Mengden without shelling out t
he $100K.
It seems Arizona could reach out again, pay the buyout, and get Mengden. But bec
ause their initial agreement was voided, maybe any other MLB team could do the s
ame thing.

The hangup appears to be over $100,000. The way that the Mexican Leagues work is
that if a player signs with a Major League team after July 1, then the MLB club
has to pay $100,000. Before that time, there is zero buyout that has to be paid
by the acquiring team.
