中职近年来最具代表性的投手罗力，要和大家聊聊他的故事、他的家人，以及他的新家—
台湾。
Xinzhuang stadium has always been my favorite stadium. I just love how cra
zy the noise gets, when the fans get loud, we can feel the sound bounces off t
he roof. After the renovation, we now got a great locker room, a fantastic lou
nge, and cafeteria, a nice weight room along with a field in great condition.
新庄球场一直都是我最爱的球场，在这里可以完全感受到粉丝的热情参与，当主场球迷
们高分贝为我们加油的时候，声音经过屋顶的反射到场上，似乎把整个球场笼罩在加油的
声浪之中，在场上听非常震撼。在富邦去年球季末的整建之后，整个新庄球场变得更赞了
！我们有很棒的休息室、沙发区、咖啡厅，当然，还有状况更好的场地。
It’s gonna sound a little weird, but the new showers are so nice! We got th
is rain shower, like water coming out of the ceiling, and we can even switch b
etween different modes. It’s way better than the original normal shower, it’
s just so comfortable and awesome.
这听起来可能有点怪，不过关于这次整建，我最满意的部分之一是我们淋浴间的莲蓬头
……装修之后，我们现在有那种天花板式花洒的莲蓬头！甚至还有不同的出水模式可以调
整，之前的莲蓬头就是那种普通的手持的，洗起来真的很舒服、很不一样。
Ok, this is not a story about shower, so…...let’s get it started.
好啦，放心，这篇文章不是要讨论莲蓬头～那我们开始吧！
When I was a little kid, my two elder brothers played baseball, basketball,
and football. But baseball has always been the one for me. Coming out of high
school, I wasn’t a prospect or anything like that, not on anybody’s radar in
terms of being drafted. Back then, I was actually a better-known football pla
yer than a baseball player. I had a scholarship offered by Villanova to play b
aseball, and also a chance to do both at Brown University, but I decided to fo
cus on baseball and my academics, it’s pretty much my love for baseball that
made me continue to play baseball in college, and that’s why I chose to play
baseball at Villanova, and it turned out to be great!
在我小时候，我的两个哥哥打棒球、篮球和美式足球，我虽然三项运动都有接触，但最
爱的就是棒球。高中毕业的时候，我不是什么潜力新秀，当然也不是大联盟选秀会被讨论
起的名字；那时我的美式足球其实打得比棒球还要出色，Villanova大学提供我奖学金去
打棒球，Brown大学则是让我可以双栖美足和棒球，但我决定在大学专注于棒球以及学业
上，因此选择了在Villanova大学打棒球，事后证明这是个很棒的决定！
In the past 15~20 years, sports in general have become very, or sometimes, t
oo specific. Kids nowadays often tend to focus on only one sport. Actually, pl
aying different sports do help the kids to improve their game, both physically
and mentally. For example, the basic principle in the throwing motion of foot
ball and baseball are pretty alike and compatible. With both require using you
r back leg to generate power, and your arm has to be on time at release point
to accurately execute the throw. The kinetic chain is pretty much transferable
between them. Playing in these two sports helps the kids to pick up the same
basic principles they share easier.
我认为在过去的15~20年，运动项目的专一性被太过强调了，往往在很早的时候，孩子
们就开始只从事一种运动。其实，参与多项运动对提升他们的身体能力与心理素质才是最
好的。拿我自己的经历来说，棒球和美式足球的投掷动作的基本原理很相似，是可以相容
互通的。这两项运动都仰赖你的后腿蓄积力量，并讲究到位的出手点；两种运动的动力炼
机制是可以相辅相成的，交互接触这两种运动能让孩子融会贯通，了解投球的基本原理。
It’s important for kids to play lots of different sports, and sports don’t
always have to be about skills and winning. Sports should be a chance for kid
s to be athletic and to have fun. It’s also healthier for them, too, playing
on different teams, playing with different kids and just enjoy the competition
for what it is. It’s okay if you don’t win, you gotta learn the defeat, lea
rn to lose in the right way.
我觉得对孩子来说，接触多样不同的运动真的很重要，运动不该只是追求技巧跟赢球，
这时候的目的是让他们培养运动细胞并感受运动带来的乐趣，这对培养他们健康的心态也
有帮助：在不同队伍中跟不同的孩子相处，学习享受比赛，即使输了也没关系，他能学习
到如何正确地接纳挫折、失败。
Don’t put pressure on kids to play only one sport and be good at it when th
ey’re still young, that’s not what it’s about. When you’re older, say high
school, if you’re into one sports, it’s okay to narrow down the options. Bu
t before that, diversity and trying new things is important to develop the lov
e for learning in general. Personally, I would like my kids to enjoy themselve
s in all kinds of activities, and as they grow older, they’re going to make t
heir own decision. I want to be the one facilitating their passion, not pushin
g them into doing something they don’t like.
别太早给孩子压力去从事单一一项运动然后练到顶尖，至少在他12岁之前尽量别这么做
吧！这并不是运动的本质，重点是去享受运动、强健身心并从中得到乐趣，或许等孩子长
大，高中的时候吧，当他想专精一项运动的时候，那时再定下来；在那之前，让孩子勇于
多方尝试新事物，这是培养他们对于学习的热爱的重点。以我自己身为一个爸爸来说，我
会希望我的孩子参与各种不同的运动或活动，当他们长大后，他们可以自己选择，我希望
我是那个在他们身边助燃他们热情的人，而不是强迫他们做自己不喜欢的事情。
Just as in my case, between football and baseball, it was more of a decision
about what was going to make me happier, and the answer was quite apparent. V
illanova was a good fit for me, people I know there are all my kind of guy, I
really had a great time there.
如同当时的我，在美式足球跟棒球之间的选择看似艰难，但也不过就是哪个决定能让我
更快乐的扪心自问，后来也证明这是对的选择，Villanova大学的环境跟同侪跟我都处的
很来，我真的很享受在那的四年时光。
As for my major, it was political science. I originally tried to be an econo
mics major, but after taking that disastrous test in my sophomore year, which
I studied so hard for it, I had second thoughts. I couldn’t figure out any of
the answers on the paper, and I just sat there for an hour. I don’t enjoy th
at much dealing with these numbers and models stuff, and I figured that people
, history, and culture are more interesting to me. So, as I handed out that em
pty test paper, I decided my next major would be political science.
喔对了，我在大学主修政治，我原本是主修经济，但大二时，有次考试，我准备得超认
真，结果考卷发下来之后一题都不会写……我就真的呆呆坐在那坐了一个小时，然后开始
想自己要转到什么系，唉！我对经济要处理大量的数字与规划模型就是提不起劲嘛！当我
把那张白卷交出去的时候，也决定了转去政治系，学习这些型塑世界的历史事件的确对我
来说有趣多了。
It was always a dream of mine to become a professional baseball player, but
I gotta have a backup plan for that. If I was not drafted after college, the p
lan was going straight to work, and hopefully find a job in Manhattan. Thankfu
lly, I did get drafted. San Francisco Giants picked me up in round 50, and onl
y four more players got drafted after me. Pretty close, huh?
当一个职棒选手一直是我的梦想，但我也总得有生涯选择的备案，那时的计画是如果大
学毕业之后我没有在选秀中选，我就会直接去工作了，最希望的是在曼哈顿能找到份工作
。很幸运地，我在整个选秀会的倒数第五顺位被旧金山巨人队选中，开启了我的职棒生涯
，很惊险吧！哈哈！
Looking back from now, that was the turning point. My life would be a lot di
fferent was it not for baseball. What matters the most is I don’t think I’d
have the life perspective I have now, in terms of how I view the world. Growin
g up in New Jersey, about a 30-minute-drive away from New York City, everyone
in that area kind of grew up with the idea of getting a job and staying close
to New York – after all, the NY is where everything happens.
现在回忆起，那时真的可说是人生中的转捩点，如果不是棒球，我的人生现在会有很大
的不同，棒球可说是带给我全新的人生观与世界观。身为在纽泽西长大的孩子（离纽约市
30分钟车程的地方），这边的人总是有那种“纽约就是全世界”，“就是要在纽约找个工
作，然后整辈子都待在这”的想法吧，久而久之我也好像耳濡目染于这种观念。
I got to travel a lot because of baseball. Playing in the States, I’ve live
d in Arizona, Oregon, and Georgia. I started to realize that there are a lot o
f other places that I can see myself living in, outside of New Jersey. That wa
s the first step, later I’ve got the chance to play in Mexico, Puerto Rico, h
ere in Taiwan, and a year in Korea.Baseball gave me the opportunity to experie
nce different ways of life and different perspective people have around the wo
rld, and that could really change a person. Was it not for baseball, I think I
’ll be working somewhere near New York, and my wife will be working still in
New York as well. For me, I like how my life turned out to be.
然而，因为棒球，我多了很多四处奔走的经验，在美国打小联盟、独立联盟的时候，我
居住过亚利桑那州、奥勒冈州、乔治亚州，我逐渐开始发现，在纽泽西以外的世界，还有
很多地方是我能够居住、生活的。这还只是第一步，之后我到墨西哥、波多黎各、台湾以
及韩国打球。棒球给我这样体验世界各种文化与价值观的机会，而这机会真的完全改变了
我。如果不是棒球，我大概会在纽约或纽约近郊工作吧，然后我的老婆也会继续待在纽约
工作，比起那样子，我更喜欢现在我们所拥有的生活。
Whenever I got to choose between staying in the hotel room and use the room
service or step out of the hotel and to explore, the former is never really in
an option. When I was younger, I was a little more intimidated getting out of
my comfort zone, it was the new cities, new people, and new cultures over the
years that made me a person willing to explore.
当可以选择待在房间使用客房服务，或是自己出外探索时，现在的我其实根本不会考虑
前者，年轻时候的我可不是这样，那时我对于跨出舒适圈要比现在畏缩得多，是这些年来
走过的这些城市、认识的这些人、体验过的这些不同文化打开了我的眼界，让我成长为今
天的自己。
This is my sixth season playing in CPBL. When my family is here with me, eve
ry morning is family time, after breakfast, we’ll head for a place such as an
indoor playground to let the kids play, then about lunch time I’ll come to t
he stadium. My son will watch my game on TV for an inning or two, and it’s ab
out to get boring for him. I’ve brought him to the stadium for a couple times
, running outside and playing catch. I hope we get to do that longer, at least
long enough for him to grow older to remember our life here, and remember me
as a baseball player.
这是我在中华职棒的第六个球季，当我的家人也在台湾陪我时，每个早上都是家庭时间
。早餐之后，我们会去找个场地让小孩玩，像是室内的游乐场；到了午餐时间我就会前往
球场。我的大儿子会在电视上看我比赛看个一两局（这差不多是他的耐心极限）。我也带
他来过几次新庄球场，我们在球场上跑跑步啦、传接球。我希望我可以继续做这些事，再
做久一点吧！至少久到他之后长大了会记得我们这些美好时光，也记得他老爸曾经是个职
棒选手。
Every morning and every night I’ll talk to my wife and my kids on Facetime
( stuff is pretty amazing!), so we can see each other. Since morning here in T
aiwan is about the night time in Arizona, and vice versa, the time difference
hasn’t been a trouble. My family loves Taiwan, and I feel very fortunate to p
lay baseball and make a living this way. As a family, we got a lot of time to
spend together, especially in the off-season as the training only takes a coup
le hours a day. If my wife were still an attorney and I’m working some other
job, there wouldn’t be so much family time as we have now. Being able to play
baseball is a thing I certainly appreciate and feel thankful for.
当我的家人不在台湾的时候，每天早上和晚上我都会用Facetime（这玩意真满神奇的～
）跟老婆和孩子们聊天，所以我们还能看到彼此，台湾这里的早上就是亚利桑那的晚上，
所以就是我在早上跟他们说晚安，晚上的时候跟他们说早安，我的家人都很爱台湾，也对
于我能在这里打职棒，以棒球赚取收入感到十分幸运。因为打棒球的关系，我们有很多的
时间可以相处，特别是休季的时候，每天的自主训练顶多几个小时，我在那几个月的每一
天都可以全心全意地陪伴家人。如果我从事的是其他工作，我老婆也还在纽约当律师的话
，我们无法有像现在这多家庭时间可以享受，所以我必须再说一次，能够像现在这样打球
真的是一件令我感到万分感激的事。
I couldn’t be happier than the way Fubon treat me, they make me and my fami
ly extremely comfortable. I really appreciate the respect and care of the orga
nization, they have just done a great job from day 1. I think I’m exactly whe
re I’m supposed to be with Fubon. For a player, being able to walk in a clubh
ouse every day and call it a home, well, that has gotta be the best feeling!
真的也很感谢富邦球团对我和家人贴心的照顾，让我们在台湾能生活得很舒适，他们从
第一天起就给予我的尊重与关心，真的让我很感动。此时、此刻我在这支球队，就好像是
生命中最棒的安排，简直不能再要求更多了。对一个选手来说，可以每天走进这个休息室
，把这支球队、这个球场称做自己的家，那真的是超级、超级棒的感觉！
