MIAMI — The Pirates on Sunday promoted Class A Bradenton catcher John
Bormann. To the majors.
Just prior to first pitch, the Pirates announced the unusual move. Meanwhile,
Bormann was driving across the state from Bradenton to Miami. The move
suggests continued concern with the health of Francisco Cervelli, who has
dealt with pain in his right foot this season. Chris Stewart started Sunday’
s game.
Bormann, 24, has played in seven games for Bradenton this season, hitting
.136/.231/.182. The Pirates took him in the 24th round out of Texas-San
Antonio in 2015.
The Pirates did not need to clear a 40-man spot because they had openings.
Danny Ortiz, recalled Saturday as an bona fide outfield defender when David
Freese went on the disabled list, was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis.
