Boston Red Sox shortstop prospect Tzu-Wei Lin has always been known for his
glove. In fact, his bat was considered a negative by many, but he’s flipping
the script in 2017.

Since joining the Red Sox system in 2012, Lin’s best average in a season was
.255. That just so happened to be in 2012 and it happened in just 29 Rookie
Ball games. Coming into the season, the shortstop was hitting just .235, and
hadn’t shown much growth at the plate.

But 2017 is different.

Through 12 games for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Lin is hitting .333
(13-for-39) with a .366 on-base percentage. While both of those would be
career-highs, it’s his .513 slugging percentage that takes the biggest leap.

It’s not like the left-handed hitter is tearing the cover off the ball this

argued that he is. Lin already has two doubles, one triple, and one home run
on the year.

While he’s never been miserable at hitting doubles (49 in the last three

Of course, one home run doesn’t mean much, even this early on. Even if a

It could be that he’s just on a hot streak. Maybe he’s just getting pitches
grooved to him by the pitchers. Or, maybe, he’s finally adjusted his
approach and he’s only going to get better.

There is evidence to back up that theory. First, he spent some time with the
Big League club in Spring Training. He’s done it before but was 0-for-4 in
two years. This time around, Lin went 4-for-13 with a double, three runs
batted in, a steal, and an impressive four walks.

Then there’s his swing. In the past, Lin looked as if he had to force the
