After finding out the news that Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons will be
participating in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest and Trail Blazers forward Rober
t Covington will be participating in the Skills Challenge, Rip City was going t
o have three players to root on during the All-Star festivities.
But as of Tuesday afternoon, Damian Lillard has decided to withdraw from the Thr
ee-Point Contest, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. Per the report, Li
llard has decided not to take place in the competition due to "rest purposes."
This would’ve been Lillard's third time participating in the contest after havi
ng to withdraw from it last season due to a right groin strain that he suffered
on the road against the Grizzlies right before the All-Star break.
As of right now, it still sounds like Lillard will participate in the All-Star g
ame after earning his sixth All-Star nod.
Both the Three-Point Contest and Skills Challenge will take place before the 202
0-21 All-Star game, while the Slam Dunk Contest is slated for halftime of the ga
me.
The Trail Blazers point guard is averaging 29.6 points on 44.5 FG% and 38.0 3PT%
.
But after averaging 35.9 minutes per game while working to keep the short-handed
Trail Blazers in the win column, nobody is going to fault Lillard for withdrawi
ng his name for the three-point shootout.
The Skills Challenge and Three-Point Contest will tip-off at 3:30p.m. PST Saturd
ay.
