3:44pm: De Aza’s contract guarantees him $5.75MM in 2016, Rosenthal now
reports (Twitter link). He can also earn up to $1.25MM worth of incentives,
for a max payday of $7MM next season. His contract is pending a physical.
12:41pm: De Aza’s one-year deal is worth roughly $4.5MM, per Buster Olney of
ESPN.com (on Twitter).
11:16am: The two sides are in agreement on a deal, Heyman tweets.
10:34am: It’s a one-year deal, per Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).
10:19am: The Mets are on the verge of signing outfielder Alejandro De Aza,
according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). On Monday, Jerry
Crasnick of ESPN.com reported that the Mets had interest in De Aza, along
with a couple of other outfield options.
De Aza, 32 in April, profiles as a decent platoon option. His lifetime
.274/.338/.418 line against righties is solid, if unspectacular, and his
recent work in center field hasn’t been viewed favorably through the lens of
DRS and UZR. (He also hasn’t played center with any sort of regularity since
2013, when he posted a -18 DRS mark.) De Aza did do well against righties in
2015, however, hitting .278/.351/.448 against right-handed pitching. Now,
the veteran will likely serve as a platoon partner for Juan Lagares.
The Mets have been known to be on the hunt for an outfielder, though De Aza
probably wasn’t one of the top names that fans were hoping for. A reunion
with Yoenis Cespedes doesn’t appear to be in the cards and today’s move
could impact the team’s pursuit of Denard Span.
